Come one, come all as Dior brings the circus to Dubai

Afbeelding

DUBAI: Just weeks after wowing the world with its circus-themed Spring/Summer 2019 couture show in Paris, Dior has announced that it is set to bring the show to the Middle East in what will be its first show in the region.

The spectacle is set to unfold on March 18 in Dubai, although an exact location has not yet been announced.

The runway show will feature looks from its couture show, staged in Paris in January, as well as a few designs exclusively for the Gulf region.

For Dior’s show in the French capital in January, Italian head designer Maria Grazia Chiuri took the well-heeled crowd to the circus with arguably her most sublimely balanced collection, AFP reported at the time.

A troupe of all-female acrobats of all body shapes led out the show inside a retro big top — complete with harlequin-pattern floor — built in the gardens of the Rodin Museum in the center of the French capital.

Chiuri is the first woman ever to lead the mythic French label, and her feminism is never far away.

All her nearly 70 models wore glittery skullcaps fastened under their chins — think aviation pioneer Amelia Earhart meets commedia dell’arte character Pierrot.

But there was nothing remotely clownish about the muted elegance of the clothes, featuring lashings of embroidery and beadwork, to summon up the spirit of the circus-set 1917 ballet “Parade.”

Chiuri’s designs mixed the romantic and the muscular, cutting her dreamy organza and tulle dresses with whip smart ringmaster and lion-tamer jackets, leather corsets and high-wire jumpsuits.

“Every look has its own personality, just like circus characters,” she told AFP, “brave, funny, happy and sad.”

“The circus is a world of its own, which passes from town to town, changing each one a little as it goes — a bit like fashion week,” the creator added.

The tattooed lady, that staple of the Victorian sideshow, also got a drum roll with a look inspired by Maud Wagner, America’s first known female tattoo artist.

The designer, who sports a few herself, floated surrealist neck tattoos in a previous show.

Critics predicted her silk bandage roll gowns and architectural tutus would also be a hit with haute couture’s super-rich clientele, the only people who can afford the handmade creations.

Previous shows have involved collaborations with women writers, musicians and choreographers.

This time she worked with the female-led British acrobat company Mimbre.

Chiuri said she was struck by how inclusive the circus world was, and how it offered “a possible equality... where beauty, origin, gender and age are no longer important.
Only technique and daring matter.”

It was this that inspired the collection’s necklaces and bracelets of interlocking gold hands.
An acrobat “puts their life in the hands of another, you have to really trust each other,” she said.

If her Parisian showcase was anything to go by, Dubai’s fashion elite are in for a treat on March 18.

3 ways to limber up before the Dior Haute Couture circus comes to Dubai

The Dior SS19 Couture show in Dubai is still over a month away... which gives us just enough time to sharpen up
our circus skills before the first look hits the runway

For the Dior Haute Couture SS19 show in Paris, the acrobats of the all-female circus company Mimbre shared top billing with Maria Grazia Chiuri's dreamy designs.
As Dubai prepares for Le Cirque du Dior, Grazia presents three ways to get into the circus spirit while we wait for the greatest show on earth.
Send in the clowns...

1. Dubai Circus School

Who knew we had our very own circus school in Dubai?
Somewhere in a warehouse in Al Quoz, Dubai-dwelling daredevils are learning silks, hoop, trapeze and floor acrobatics, plus circus circuit training for the bravest among them.
Columbian Co-Founder Marcela Bello, who started Dubai Circus School with her husband Javier, believes that circus skills are life-changing.
"The circus is a fun place. It’s a positive environment where everyone feels supported. It’s a community. We're a family."
According to Marcela, the idea was born to demonstrate that death-defying acts that first seem impossible are actually achievable - a realisation that then students can apply to all areas of their lives.
"You come to Dubai Circus School to get out of your comfort zone and discover something about yourself."
Discipline and commitment are required, as it's recommended you train between two and three times a week to see a real improvement.
The most rewarding part of running the Dubai Circus School for Marcela? "Watching my students realise what they’re capable of."
Who wants to run away to join the circus with us?

Classes cost Dhs126 each, with packages starting from Dhs1,239. For more info, visit http://www.dubaicircusschool.ae

Recreating Dior Make-up Creative and Image Director Peter Phillips' SS19 Couture beauty look for your aerial fitness class is optional but encouraged

2. Aerial Arts

According to Pole Fit Dubai Aerial instructor Sarah Jones, "Aerial silks are an amazing full-body workout.
It’s great for improving upper body strength, one of the best abs workouts around, and it doesn't impact your body as hard as most gym exercises.
In your first few lessons, you'll learn how to climb and do basic wraps and use your body to do counter balance poses that may look super-impressive but are actually very achievable with the correct technique."
Sarah adds, "Aerial silk classes are challenging but not impossible.
I love how you can see yourself improve from week to week whether it’s just being able to climb that extra step higher or a routine becomes easier."

Aerial silks classes at Pole Fit Dubai take place every day and cost Dhs105 per each, and with packages
starting from Dhs735.http://www.polefitdubai.com/

3. La Perle by Dragone

If you prefer to experience the thrill of the circus from the safety of your own seat rather than soaring through the air on a trapeze, might we suggest La Perle by Dragone?
Dubai's first resident live theatre show is a frenzy of acrobatics, contortion, stunt riding and martial art performed in a state-of-the-art aqua theatre.
Book online now to save 40 per cent on tickets for the month of March.
Alternatively, choose La Perle's Dining and Show package, which includes a Gold ticket plus a set menu at any of Habtoor City's surrounding
eateries such as Babiole, The Market, Zoco, The City Grill, Namu, or BQ from just Dhs555.
