Forget Animal Rights, Circus Fans Want Elephants
A Shriners circus in Massachusetts decided it couldn't afford to go animal-free.

The Melha Shrine Circus in Massachusetts has been delighting (or, in the case of the clown acts, terrifying) children of all ages for more than 60 years.
For most of those years, the entertainment included animal acts. In 2016, however, the circus bowed to pressure from animal rights groups and went animal-act-free.

In 2017, the animals are back. Ethical quandaries notwithstanding, it turns out animals sell tickets.

In 2016, Melha Shrine joined many (but certainly not all) circuses in the country in banning animal acts from its annual event, which stretches across several days in late April or early May.
The Los Angeles Shriners took this step in 2014, but other Shriners circuses resisted, saying animals such as big cats and elephants were a big draw for attendees.
PETA was very happy about Melha’s decision, and encouraged people to leave messages on the event’s Facebook page thanking the Shriners for making it.

Thank yous apparently weren’t enough.
Last May, a few weeks after the animal-free 2016 circus, Melha Shrine said it had received an “overwhelming number” of comments expressing disappointment in the lack of animals in that year’s event, and was “reviewing our options” for 2017.
Sure enough, when promotional materials for the 2017 event went up, animals were featured prominently.

A subsequent press release said elephants and “Neecha Braun and her Amazing Dobermans” would be part of the lineup.

Why the change? The chairman of the circus, Al Zippin, told MassLive that it was what the people who actually bought tickets to the show wanted.
And, more importantly, it was what the people who didn’t buy tickets wanted: The circus lost money for the first time in its history in 2016.
Attendance was down and many people who did go demanded refunds due to a lack of pachyderms.
Zippin told the Associated Press that attendance was down 6,500 in 2016 compared to the year before.

A petition to take the animals back out of Melha’s show has nearly 75,000 signatures, but fewer than 3,000 of them come from people who say they live in Massachusetts.
Assuming all of those people would have gone to an animal-free show, that’s still less than half the number of ticket sales the circus claims it lost because it took the animals away.

The Ringling Bros. and Barnum and Bailey circus announced in January that it would close in May after more than a century, due in part, it said, to declining ticket sales after it stopped using elephants in its shows in 2016. (It was also fined $270,000 in 2011 after it was accused of violating the Animal Welfare Act.)
The Melha Shrine circus maintains that its animals are treated well (animal rights groups, obviously, disagree) and that the circus is a necessary fundraiser for the organization.
It can’t afford to lose money on an event that is “crucial” to doing the opposite while it waits for the attitudes of the people of Western Massachusetts to change.
